Monthly Roundup #15 - May '19

May was another enjoyable month, with functions, a show and one of my annual highlights, drum tech’ing on Big Church Day Out, which I thoroughly enjoy!

Early on in the month we had a prep day for the drums and some other backline for Big Church Day Out. This involved checking over the drums, putting fresh heads on most of them, a spot of initial tuning, and labelling up cases with which different venue the gear was destined for. A day of tinkering with drums - what more could I ask for?!

Some of the drums being used for Big Church Day Out - there was an entire, new DW rig (consisting of 19 more drums!) being delivered straight to site on top of this existing gear!

The first gig of the month was a function with local band, “The Rhythm Crew”, which was the last one of a very busy stint together over the last couple of months. As usual, it was a nice gig in good company!

The next gig was a week long run of “The Wedding Singer”. Having done a few more traditional shows over the last few months (Les Mis, West Side Story, Cabaret etc), it was fun to do something a bit more contemporary, where the drums were free to “just groove” the majority of the time. It was a really fun show with a great band, and overall a really good week!

Next up was Big Church Day Out itself, having prepped for it earlier on in the month. It’s a short and sweet affair, with us arriving to set up and have the first few sound checks on the Friday, then the festival itself takes place on the Saturday and Sunday. My responsibilities were to get the kits set as per the bands riders, then to check the drummers are happy with what's laid on for them and keep an eye on them during their sets. It’s always great to meet so many folks from both near and far, with lots of artists coming in from overseas. As always, we had a real treat with the drummers who came to play, and it was a pleasure to take care of their drumming needs!

And that brought my May to a close! Despite there not being loads of different things on, it was a nice variety of really enjoyable work. As always, thanks for checking in and catch you next time! All the best, Ed.
